Dividing the canvas in two parts allows me to have a relationship between two paintings in one.
My Split paintings reflect the evolution of my exploration into various processes and styles. By breaking the surface with a strip I can venture into those different styles and combine opposing images while retaining a cohesive body of work.
Certain figures, cityscapes, places and memories serve as themes when I begin each picture, but I let the images come from my subconscious as I progress. These themes influence all aspects of the process, from composition to format to paint application and color. I need a tie to memory or place in my work to be able to create images in my own individual voice. |
