My paintings are greatly influenced by abstract expressionism and automatism. Although I work from my subconscious like the abstract expressionists and the automatists did I also have a specific story in mind when I begin each painting. The story is the structure I work from and my paintings are a non-literal interpretation of that story. The gesture, paint handling, and the mark making all add up to a personal memoir or story I am telling in paint. The color, composition, and the format are all determined by the story in some way, and I want the viewer to be able to connect with my work without an exact representation to go by.
As far as technique goes I make many changes during the course of the painting process. I use a slow drying medium mixed with the oil paint that gives me time to scrape off the paint if I am not satisfied with the result. This editing process allows the surface to continue to look fresh and automatic. The immediacy of the stroke represents a language for me, and that expressive language is what I find most alluring in my work.
For me there is an unexplainable nature to abstraction that excites me.I am never sure how any one of my canvases will turn out when I begin, and I enjoy not knowing how I will make each painting work for me. |
